Recently discovered, the effectiveness of light in the treatment of alopecia is now recognized.

Many devices exist, and almost as many protocols. It is difficult to accurately assess the effectiveness of these protocols because the treatment must be followed diligently over several months, as well as medical checks; several devices for home treatments are available from manufacturers.

Thanks to numerous studies and experiments, photobiomodulation by laser or by LED has been proven and seems to now be unanimously accepted.

In this section we invite you to learn more about laser and LED photobiomodulation to help you make a free and informed choice.

What is photobiomodulation? What happens during a session? How does it work? What are the indications? What are the advantages? Are the results interesting?

We will answer all these questions in order for you to learn more.

What is Low Level Light Therapy (LLLT) or photobiomodulation?

LLLT-Hair is a painless treatment for baldness. Low Level Light Therapy (LLLT), also called photobiomodulation, is the application of low energy light, whether produced by laser diodes or by LEDs. LLLT is used in several medical fields such as acne treatment, facial rejuvenation, wound healing and more recently in combating hair loss.

How does a photobiomodulation session take place?

During this session, you are comfortably placed under a helmet comprising many laser diodes or LEDs, which emit a low-energy luminous flux that penetrates up to 4 mm under the skin, where the hair follicles are located.

How does it work?

The cells absorb light, the energy production process is stimulated, which leads to the improvement of the function of the treated cells: stimulation of microcirculation, reduction of inflammation, improvement of cell metabolism and protein synthesis.

European studies and an American experiment approved by the Food and Drug Administration (FDA) with these laser treatments show that hair loss is stopped in 95% of cases and hair regrowth is stimulated in 55% of cases. Patients who used this treatment reported that their hair was thicker and had more volume while noticing varying degrees of regrowth.

What are the indications for a photobiomodulation session?

We have limited experience with these treatments, which we believe are supplementary but not essential.

Regarding the indications, you can choose one or more laser photobiomodulation sessions in the following cases:

  • If your androgenetic alopecia is hereditary
  • If you are considering or have had a hair transplant
  • If your hair loss is due to taking certain medications or following chemotherapy
  • If you lose your hair after pregnancy

What are the advantages of a photobiomodulation session?

There are several.

First, it is a non-invasive treatment, which does not make you endure any heat or pain; it can be done at home.

There are no side effects and the light beams cover 100% of the scalp.

This treatment can be used by both men and women and there is no trace of the treatment at the end of the session.

This is the only FDA approved non-drug treatment for hair growth.

It is relatively inexpensive and provides excellent results.

The frequencies can vary according to your needs and the sessions are very short. This treatment does not take too long.

It is recommended that you purchase a headset from a manufacturer, which allows you to repeat sessions at will and can potentially be used by another family member.

What results can you expect after one or more photobiomodulation sessions?

Also, according to European studies and the American experiment, hair density in subjects who used laser LLLT increased on average by 19 additional hairs per cm², while hair loss continued on average by 7 hairs per cm² for those using the placebo device.

The treated subjects also had an improvement in hair condition: thicker, shinier, and more manageable compared to those who used the placebo device.
